Introducton to American Politics
This course is designed to provide motivated 12th grade (and highly motivated 11th grade) social studies students a broad and critical survey of the American political system in terms of thought, practice and experience. Through the study of academic texts and current event reporting, students will examine the major institutions of government (i.e. Congress, President, and Judiciary) and patterns of American political participation (i.e. voting and interest group activities). The course will also provide an introduction to the foundations of American politics and the techniques used by social scientists in the study of political science. Using a variety of resources, students will examine how institutions influence individual and group power in the United States, and how the interests of different groups can best be represented in the United States. The culminating project for successful completion of this course is a labor intensive student project. Students are responsible for creating a political issue advertising campaign using the media technology available at the school. This course fulfills the New York state 12th grade Participation in Government requirement.
