Welcome to Mrs. French's 9th Grade Message Board!

My Message Board has been created in order to create an online discussion between students and teachers on given readings and topics in the study of 9APWH and 9th grade Global History and Geography.

Participants should review the following traits of good discussions to be used during our online discussions.

Positive Discussion Behaviors                                  Negative Discussion Behaviors

Giving your opinion                                               Interrupting

Making inferences                                                 Repeating

Giving examples                                                    Introducing unrelated topic

Referring to/Quoting the text                                 Dominating

Making Connections                                             Personal Attack

Recognizing contradictions                                    Distracting others

Asking thoughtful questions                                   Never speaking

Building on other’s ideas

Involving others

Combining information

(To come up w/ a new idea)

 Guidelines for Discussion

*Refer to the text when you need to during the discussion.

*Ask for clarifications; do not stay confused.

*Stick to the point.

*Don’t raise hands; take turns.

*Use your “public” voice so that you can be heard by everyone.

*Talk to each other, not just to me.

 Good discussion questions . . .

*do not have obvious or “right” answers.

*go beyond the text and make participants in the discussion connect to the text, predict what will happen next, and/or evaluate characters and events.

*are general, not specific.  Questions with specific answers do not create discussion.
