Considering it is a likley thematic essay theme, What were some of the cases where more power was given to the executive branch, and what are points that should be addressed?

Also, what are some of the other more likley topics?

54'40 or fight was part of our Manifest Destiny. It was used as a campaign slogan in the 1840s to promote establishing our northern border with British run Canada. Hawks wanted to fight for it. We ended up making the treaty that set our current border from Washington to the Great lakes.

SEC - Security & Exchange Commission - they are the ones who monitor the Stock Exchange (you know they put Martha Stewart in Jail!)

WPA - Works Progress Administration created projects to put the unemployed to work, most famously artists, musicians, and playwrites. The murals in our post office were painted by an artist commissioned by this program.

FDIC - part of the Glass-Steagall Act it created an insurance for deposits stored in banks. At first it insured up to $500 but now reaces $100,000. It gave the people great conidence that the banks were stable.

AAA - Agricultural Adjustment Act dealt with farmers giving them loans so they could keep their farms but more importantly it helped to adjust prices by adjusting supply. It paid famries subsidies in exchange for farmes not farming acres of their land, destroying crops, or slaughtering livestock. It got local farmers to police it through local committees (Washington County benefited greatly from this)

PWA - Public Works Administration - jobs project that built infrastructure projects like Dix Avenue, and public buildings like schools, post offices, police stations, libraries...

CCC - Civilian Conservation Corps - placed young unemployed men to work conserving our environment. making trails, planting trees, clearing underbrush. They built camps with barracks in places like the Adirondack mountains and many of them came from the cities.

Remember this could be asked either as granting more power to the Executive (president) or as limiting civil liberties. either way it is the same question. Adams in dealing with the Quasi-war with France in the 1790s passed the Alien and Sedition Act in order to put down those who spoke out against the gov't. Jeffersona and Madison responded with the Kentucky and Virginia resolutions calling for states to have the power to nullify federal laws.

Lincoln took away our rights to habeas corpus durig the Civil War

Wilson passed Sedition laws during WWI to stop anti-war speakers like Eugene v. Debs. this resulted in the Schenck Case in which Schenck published pamphlets against the war and the draft and was arrested. the questions was whether freedom of speech was violated. the court said no because the words caused a "Clear and present danger"

The Smith Act was passed during WWII for the same purpose, later used to support getting rid of Communists in the McCarthy era

Japanese Internment during WWII supported by teh Supreme court in Korematsu v. US.

LBJ got a blank check with the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution in 1964 and sent troops to Vietnam to fight it was taken back in 1970 and the War Powers Act limited the president's power in 1973 by making him get permission from Congress to keep troops for longer than 90 days.

Finally, 9/11 led to congress pasing the Patriot Act adn approving wars in Afghanistan and Iraq

the Gi Bill was passed at the end of WWII because we feared that the returning soldiers from WWII would come back to unemployment. it offered them an opportunity to get and education and offered low priced loans for affordable housing (these were the loans used to pay for thehouses built in the suburbs of Levittown).

so the very first form of government was the articles of confederation but than seemed unfit so the constitution was brought about? Is that right?
