The Great Depression
Materials for the Unit on the Great Depression
Brother Can you Spare a Dime? Does the government bear the responsibility of trying to stabilize the economy and the financial system, as well as of assisting people affected by economic downturns? In order to answer this question you should gain an understanding of the causes of an economic downturn are, empathize with the experience of the people experiencing the troubles that exist in such a downturn, and analyze the positive and negative consequences of government involvement in our economy and our lives. Then you may determine your beliefs toward the role and purpose of government. _____________________________________________________________________ Students will be required to work both in groups and individually as they research and study the Great Depression of the 1930s. Individual Work: Individuals will be delegated by their group as one of the following roles; Farmer in the Dust Bowl Milk Producer in the farms of Washington County Wall Street Broker/Banker Entertainer (Writer, Broadway actor, Hollywood actor, athlete, artist, or musician) Factory Worker African American farmer/laborer Father Ridin' the Rails Mother raising the children Students will research the lives and troubles faced by their person and display their research through notes and completion of the paragraph outline. Individuals will complete the image interpretation “What's my Story” activity to display their understanding and ability to empathize with the people in the image. Individuals will research the government's New Deal policy that best suits assisting them in surviving the economic depression and complete the paragraph outline in order to explain the purpose of the policy and how it would help them. Group Project: Each group will conduct a forum during which individual members will present a description of their experiences and plea for the appropriate government assistance based on the New Deal policy. Each group (based on the role selected from the list) will create an action project that will allow the other students to experience an aspect of the troubles they faced. Jigsaw Pieces: One jigsaw puzzle piece will be earned by each student for their group by 1) Completing and turning in on time their role research notes and paragraph outline. Due Date: _____________________ 2) Completing and turning in on time the “What's my Story” image interpretation. Due Date: _____________________ 3) Completing and turning in on time their New Deal policy paragraph outline. Due Date: _____________________ 4) Completing and turning in on time the group forum and action project.
