Colonial Era 1600-1750: Forging an American Character in the Pre-Revolution Colonies

Essential Questions: Students must be able to answer these five questions in order to show an understanding of the colonial period.

1. How did the settlement of the English colonies give rise to unique political, economic, and social conditions that defined an emerging American identity?

2. How did the need for labor in the colonies give rise to chattel African slavery?

3. How was religion both a unifying and a dividing force inthe English colonies?

4. How did the interaction between Europeans and Native American peoples transform both groups and cultures?

5. How did the colonies develop "democratic" principles such as representative government, written charters, and lists of basic rights between 1607 and 1763?
