This week we honor a golden keeper and a rising setter as our athletes of the week.
First up is Hudson Falls Soccer Goalie Joe LaPan. Joe and the squad secured their first sectional win in nearly two decades with a win over Troy last month.
Coach Jerry Kilmartin says the win would not have been possible without Joe’s amazing skills in the net. It started early on, when Joe’s read on a penalty kick helped keep things close.
“Throughout this game, he was peppered with shot after shot after
shot, only to shut down a persistent Troy attacking machine,” said Kilmartin. “His performance and efforts were the best I’ve seen of a keeper in my coaching experience here at Hudson Falls.”
After regulation ended in a 1-1 tie, the game went to a penalty kick shootout, a first for LaPan. The sophomore stopped two out of four shots, sealing the win for Hudson Falls.
Next up is junior Jordan Markham. She serves as a setter on the varsity volleyball team, a critical role. Coach Sarah Carney said Jordan started the season as a hitter, but when an injury sidelined the team’s setter, Jordan stepped up in a big way in the role.
“It is a demanding job and Jordan has really risen to the challenge to become one of the most consistent setters in the league,” said Carney. “She lead our offense this [past] weekend at the Broadalbin tournament.”
Carney went on to say Jordan is a wonderful teamate, and works hard both on the court and off.
Congratulations to Joe and Jordan!
