Middle School Guidance and School Counseling

A school counselor can be a very valuable resource during middle school. Some services offered by middle school counselors are:

  • Individual or group counseling
  • Career and educational counseling
  • Interpretation of standardized test results
  • Referrals and recommendations to other pupil specialists and outside counseling services
  • Coordination of parent-teacher conferences
  • Mediation
  • Annual Reviews – Counselors meet annually with students to discuss academics, attendance, standardized test scores, personal issues contributing to academic performance, and career interests.

The school counselors work as a team with students, parents, teachers, and other school support staff to help our children have a successful middle school experience. Our students are assigned to a school counselor and parents are encouraged to contact them as the need arises.

Academic Services

  • The eighth period is a designated Academic Support Period.  Students are able to meet with teachers as needed to receive additional support.  This is also a time for students to make up missed tests/quizzes or classwork.  (Students participating in band, choir, orchestra, or pull-out AIS classes during the eighth period may not have daily support period.)

  • AIS services (remedial classes) are available to students identified as needing extra support in Math and English Language Arts.  Students are identified for AIS services based on teacher recommendation and/or performance on the NYS ELA/Math exams

  • BOCES Career and Technical Education are about helping students, workers, and lifelong learners of all ages fulfill their potential. Career and Technical Education programs provide students with:

    • Academics that are relevant to the real world and meet the requirements of the New York State Learning Standards and the No Child Left Behind Act
    • Employability skills that are aligned with business and industry standards
    • Work-Based Learning experiences that help students explore interests and careers
    • Opportunities to earn credit or advanced placement at post-secondary institutions

    Since 1979, the Center for Talented Youth (CTY) at Johns Hopkins University has focused on the needs of students with exceptionally high academic abilities. The CTY community includes very bright students from all over the world whose talents place them well ahead of their agemates. These students need special attention: greater academic challenges, interaction with intellectual peers, and teaching strategies designed especially for the gifted. CTY offers gifted students, and their families and schools as well, a wide range of programs and services to nurture their intellectual abilities, enhance personal development, and foster a better understanding of the needs of talented youth.

  • Students seeking help with homework and test preparation in a supportive environment are encouraged to attend homework club.  This is available to all students Monday through Thursday after school from 2:30-3:30 in the Middle School library.  Two supervising teachers are available to assist students with their studies.  A late bus is available to transport students home.

  • Beyond academics, school counseling resources address socio-emotional concerns that your child may be experiencing.   Please reach out to our offices so that we may directly assist you with home and/or school concerns.
