Two Seniors Complete Prestigious Science Research Application

Two of our Science Research Seniors, Kloe Duke and Emma Sesselman, were able to submit their application to the Regeneron Science Talent Search last week. Regeneron STS is the nation’s oldest and most prestigious science research competition for high school students.

Kloe Duke’s research topic is:

“Impact of Different Copper Compounds and Concentrations on the Filamentous Growth of Saccharomyces cerevisiae”

Emma Sesselman’s research topic is:

“The Effect of Blue Light Intensity on Anthocyanin Growth and Light Stress Response in Arabidopsis thaliana”

“This is a huge accomplishment just to be able to apply and finish the application process.  The Regeneron STS application is one of the most robust, difficult applications students will do” according to their Science Research Instructor Tom Vartulli. “This achievement is a representation of their hard work, resilience and ingenuity over the last three years.”

The competition is open to all 12th grade students from across the US. In order to apply, they need to submit a completed 20+ page research paper (of which they have developed over the last 3 years). The application also entailed answering several essay prompts, as well as providing 3 recommendations.  Each application is professionally vetted by a panel of PhD scientists, mathematicians or engineers in the particular subject of the applicant. There are approximately 2000 applicants from across the country and from that, 300 are picked as semi-finalists and then 40 are chosen as finalists.

The HFCSD Tiger community wishes Kloe and Emma continued success in their Science Research pursuits and congratulates them on all of their deserved achievements.
